Unveiling the Rise of Narcissistic Behaviors: Society's Reflection in a Digital Age

Writer: john xuerebjohn xuereb

All I hear these days is, “She is a narcissist” or “He is a narcissist.” This label has been thrown around so frequently in recent years to describe past partners, friends, or even casual acquaintances. To be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of it because, in reality, it is we who are creating these behavioral types in people. We are fostering narcissistic behaviors through various societal, cultural, and technological practices that emphasize self-promotion, individualism, and material success.

Social media platforms encourage constant comparison and validation-seeking, while cultural shifts towards individualism and materialism prioritize personal achievement over communal well-being.

Parenting approaches that involve excessive praise and lack of discipline contribute to inflated self-worth and entitlement. Additionally, the competitive nature of modern economies and economic insecurities drive a focus on self-interest, while technological advances promote instant gratification and create echo chambers that reinforce self-centered behaviors.

These factors combined create an environment where narcissistic traits are increasingly prevalent, highlighting the need to reconsider and balance our values and practices. Maybe I sound old-fashioned, but just look around you: young and old are on their phones 24/7. Good luck going to dinner with friends or family without seeing at least one person on their phone if not all, while their children are isolated with headphones head down staring into a black screen, further alienating them from the present moment.

We have no one to blame but ourselves. When it's too late, that's when the majority of people will wake up—if they wake up. I challenge anyone with access to the past 30 years to the present to tell me we are better off now in any aspect. The past had its faults, but this decline we are in is rapid. Soon, everyone will forget what the nuclear family is, what quiet time is, what nature is, what health is, what happiness and joy are. Who God is!! All we will know is what it means to be “plugged in.”

It’s time to wake up.
